Dr. Joseph J. Timmes


Joseph J. Timmes, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Joseph J. “Jack” Timmes, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S., is a board certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Timmes received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he also completed postgraduate training in Ophthalmology. He then completed a fellowship in retinal diseases and surgery at the Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia, perennially ranked as one of the top Ophthalmology programs in the world.

He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Timmes was the Chief of Ophthalmology at INOVA Fairfax Hospital from 1994 to 2001. He maintains a clinical faculty position in the Department of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University Medical Center, and has hospital privileges at INOVA Fairfax Hospital.

In 2005, Dr. Timmes established the Virginia Retina Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising public awareness of diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, two of the leading causes of severe vision loss in adults throughout the country.

Married to Kitty (Gotkin), a certified Ophthalmic Technologist who also trained at Georgetown University, Dr. Timmes resides in Vienna, Virginia with his wife and their two dogs. Kitty and Jack enjoy golf, socializing with friends, spending time at the beach, reading, and traveling.

Dr. Timmes is past president of the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology, and is a former board member of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology. Professional affiliations include the Northern Virginia Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American College of Surgeons, the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

After a long and illustrious retina and ophthalmology career, Dr. Timmes retired from clinical practice in December 2020. He continues to enjoy spending time devoted to Kitty, his loving dogs, and his many hobbies.
